Flightless birds are birds which cannot fly. Flightless birds have the ability to run or swim .There are about 60 species of flightless birds.Ostrich, penguin,emu,kiwi  are some examples of flightless birds.The largest living flightless bird is the ostrich .

What are migratory birds?

 

Some birds come from far off places in certain seasons. They are visitors who come from far off places.They are known as migratory birds.

What are the physical features which enable birds to move?

 

*Birds have light bones.A bird's bones are hollow and thin.

 

*Birds have light weight smooth feathers that help them fly.

 

*Flying birds have large chest muscles that move the wings.

 

 Why do birds migrate?

 

Birds migrate in search of food and resting locations.Changes in climate is also a cause for migration.

House sparrow

 

The house sparrow is strongly associated with human habitation and can live in urban or rural settings.It feeds mostly on the seeds of grains and weeds.It also eats insects and many other foods.Its number have declined and it is an endangered species of bird.

Owl is a preying bird.Owls possess large forward facing eyes and ear holes.Owls can see very well at night.It has sharp talons,and broad head.Owls can rotate their heads and necks. Owls hunt mostly small insects,rats,birds etc.

 

 

Why are bird sanctuaries important?

 

 

To protect birds and their species bird sanctuaries are built.It promotes the survival and rehabilitation of birds.Bird sanctuaries provide natural facilities for birds.

 

 

Make a note about bird sanctuaries in Kerala?

 

 

Thattekad bird sanctuary. This was the first bird sanctuary in Kerala.It also known as Salim Ali bird trial.

Kadalundi bird sanctuary , Kumarakam bird sanctuary ,

Mangalavanam,Pathiramanal etc are some other bird sanctuaries in Kerala.
